What Is Burlap

Burlap
is a coarse Fabric with a large weave pattern and natural tan coloring The course texture of burlap comes from the fact it is made from the skin of the jute plant. Jute fibers have a high content of cellulose making burlap easy to dye, very strong, heat resistant and breathable.

Most Jute is grown in India which benefits from a heavy monsoon season. After cotton, Jute is the second most important vegetable fiber in the world.

The meaning of the word Burlap
is unknown and outside the U.S it is sometimes referred to as Hessian cloth. Hessian is believed to originate to the use of the fabric, as part of the solders uniform from the German state of Hessen, referred to as Hessians.
